오프라 윈프리와 아동 정신의학자가 나눈트라우마와 뇌, 치유와 회복탄력성에 관한 대화반복되는 실수와 실패의 패턴에서 빠져나오지 못할 때, 아무리 애써도 더 나빠지기만 할 때, 내가 나 자신을 망치고 있다는 생각에 짓눌릴 때, 우리의 등 뒤에서 누군가가 답답한 얼굴로 이렇게 묻는 것만 같다. “넌 대체 뭐가 잘못된 거니?” 그러나 지금 당신을 괴롭히는 문제는 과거에 당신의 뇌에 영향을 미치는 어떤 일이 일어났기 때문일지 모른다. 특히 어린 시절에 겪은 고통과 상처는 한 사람의 몸과 마음에 때로 평생 지속되는 흔적을 남긴다. 오프라 윈프리와 아동정신의학자 브루스 D. 페리 박사는 질문의 방향을 “당신에게 무슨 일이 있었나요?”라고 바꿈으로써 문제의 진짜 원인과 답을 찾을 수 있고, 나와 내가 사랑하는 사람을 지옥 같은 마음에서 구할 수 있다고 말한다.이 책에는 트라우마와 치유를 주제로 두 사람이 30년 넘게 눈높이를 맞춰 가며 나눠 온 대화가 압축되어 있다.
